The Grenada Sustainable Development Trust Fund (GSDTF) commissioned the Grenada Coral Reef Foundation to assess the current status of the coral reefs within the Grenada Marine Protected Areas Network utilizing the Atlantic and Gulf Rapid Reef Assessment (AGRRA) Protocol.

The primary goal of the assessment was to provide insights into the status of coral reefs within the various MPAs to guide the GSDTF in developing the next call for proposals aimed at enhancing the Grenada MPA Network.

The coral reef assessment focused on the four (4) legally designated Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Grenada (i.e., Moliniere Beausejour Marine Protected Area, Woburn Clarkes Court Bay Marine Protected Area, Sandy Island Oyster Bed Marine Protected Area and Grand Anse Marine Protected Area) as well as two (2) of the proposed MPAs that are in advance stages of preparation for legal designation (i.e., the proposed Gouyave Marine Protected Area and the proposed Levera Marine Management Area). Coral Reef data was collected from established monitoring sites (i.e., index sites) within each of the MPAs and analysed for trends regarding five (5) key coral reef health indicators (i.e., coral cover, fleshy macroalgae cover, Diadema abundance and herbivorous & commercial reef fish biomass). The following provides an overview of the key findings of the assessment and recommendations on interventions that can be implemented within the MPA Program to enhance the overall health of the coral reef ecosystems.
